Farley Building Listed on the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places

By Liz Barbour

The Farley Building has officially been listed on the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places. This designation, awarded by the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources (DHR), confirms what Hollis residents have long known: the Farley Building is a significant and irreplaceable part of our town’s story.

What the Designation Means

Being listed on the State Register of Historic Places recognizes the Farley Building’s cultural, educational, and architectural importance in New Hampshire history. While the listing does not place legal restrictions on ownership, use, or renovations, it offers important benefits:

  • Access to guidance and technical assistance from the NH Division of Historical Resources

  • Eligibility for certain state grants and preservation-related tax incentives

  • Increased public awareness through statewide promotion

  • Complimentary membership in the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance

These benefits can help strengthen future restoration or adaptive reuse efforts, while honoring the building’s historical significance.

A Community Plan, Ready to Activate

Importantly, notice of this designation was received by the Town of Hollis prior to the formal dissolution of the Farley Building Community Center (FBCC) Committee. Over the past several years, this volunteer committee produced a comprehensive body of work that offers a complete roadmap for the building’s future as a multigenerational community center.

With support from the architectural firm Misiaszek Turpin pllc, the committee created:

  • A historically sensitive architectural rehabilitation plan

  • A detailed management and operations strategy

  • A unifying vision to serve residents of all ages—from preschoolers to seniors

All of this work remains available for public review at Town Hall. The full Proposal for Building and Management Plan is also available on the Hollis Town website and at www.farleyforhollis.org. The foundation has been laid. Should the community wish to revisit the future of the Farley Building, the blueprint is ready.
